Why was the city of Syracuse an important city of the Roman Empire?

We've been asked to identify two of most important cities of the Roman Empire and why they had an effect on it. Of course, Rome was an easy choice, and to me, Syracuse looks like a good pick ... but I can't find much information about it, nor any other city. Therefore, would you consider Syracuse as one of the two, and why, or would you think of another city?

  1. If you look for ancient syracuse you will find a suprising amount of information about it on the web. It's fundamental importance for the Roman empire was to do with trade in the mediterranean or course. If you look at a map of it's position you will see how it dominates the trade routes. Ostia is another city with huge importance for Roman trade, since all the grain for Rome came through this port. HTH Paul.
